Wine events, lodging packages, wine-tasting specials, wine discounts, and wine-themed prizes are part of this year’s Traverse City Uncorked, a month-long celebration of area wines. The event is held in conjunction with Michigan Wine Month, which begins May 1st.
Traverse City Uncorked is powered by a free mobile passport and organized by Traverse City Tourism. Participants can take a self-guided tour of nearly 30 wineries, and when they check into at least five locations they can claim a pair of Traverse Wine Coast socks. Those staying at Traverse City Tourism lodging partners can register to win one of two grand prizes that include a wine-themed vacation at Black Star Farms Inn near Suttons Bay or a stay at the Chateau Chantal Inn on Old Mission Peninsula.
Most locations in the passport offer discounts on wines or food. New this year, to encourage responsible wine tasting, five local tour companies are participating. Their customers, who tour by bus or bike, can check-in on the passport and this counts towards the prize. The redemption for the Traverse Wine Coast socks are at the Traverse City Tourism Visitor Center at 101 W. Grandview Blvd.
“With spring in the air, and award-winning wine in the glass, there’s no better time to explore the wine scene of the region,” said Traverse City Tourism President, Trevor Tkach (Tah-koch). “We have a unique micro-climate courtesy of Lake Michigan. Skilled winemakers are creating outstanding wines that receive widespread acclaim.”
Traverse City boasts a wide range of cool-climate wines. The region’s two peninsulas, Leelanau (Lee-lan-aw) and Old Mission are located on the 45th parallel, which is the same as some of the top wine-growing regions in Europe. A sandy soil left by receding glaciers creates ideal irrigation conditions for wine grape growing. The two wine regions produce about 55 percent of Michigan wines.
