Gilmore Car Museum Announces 2024 Dates For Model T Driving Experience

Are you ready to experience true “Time Travel?” Take your seat behind the wheel of an authentic Ford Model T!

Are you searching for a unique holiday gift for someone special? Or maybe you’re looking for something fun to do with friends? Step back in time at Gilmore Car Museum for a driving experience in an authentic Ford Model T! Registration is now live at GilmoreCarMuseum.org.

The Model T Driving Experience takes place from May through October, rain or shine, and requires pre-registration for a session from 9:00AM – 12:00PM ET or 1:30PM – 4:30PM ET on select dates. Classes fill up fast, so don’t wait to secure your 2024 date!

Driving a Model T is nothing like driving a Ford of today. Introduced by Henry Ford in 1908 right here in Michigan, this “sturdy, low-priced car for the masses” soon became the world’s best-selling automobile. Controlled by three pedals on the floor, a handle beside the seat, and two small levers on the steering wheel, you won’t find any keys or push button start in this Ford – drivers had to turn a hand crank on the front of the vehicle, all the while adjusting the choke and fuel mixture!

Our instructors will teach you all of the basics:

  • Use of spark and throttle control levers
  • Coordination of hand and foot controls
  • Proper shifting technique, reversing the vehicle
  • Correct use of the neutral/brake lever, stopping the vehicle
  • Starting basics and crank start demonstration

In addition, students will receive a historian-guided tour of some of the most fascinating pieces in our collection, an exclusive souvenir Model T booklet, a Certificate of Completion, as well as admission to the entire historic campus of the Gilmore Car Museum on the day of their class.

  • Valid driver’s license or learner’s permit is required.
  • Class size is limited for a more personalized, one-on-one learning experience.
  • YES, we still drive in the rain just like they did in 1908, so be sure to dress for the weather!
