Join W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary staff and fellow bird enthusiasts for a pair of birding events in October.
Guided bird hike
A guided bird hike is set for from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, to practice identification skills by sight and sound on a walk through the Sanctuary. The focus of this hike will be World Migratory Bird Day and this year’s theme of insects and their importance to migratory birds. Participants in the guided walk will meet at the Resource Center building, then walk down to Wintergreen Lake to look for autumn birds.
Though the program is geared toward adults, avid junior birders are also welcome. This event has a minimum enrollment of four and a maximum of 20, and registration is required. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own binoculars.
Owl prowl
Then, on Thursday, Oct. 17, an owl prowl will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The Sanctuary’s ambassador owl will make an appearance in the Sanctuary auditorium to start, then attendees will take a nighttime walk along the trails to call for owls and listen for their responses. Be sure to dress for the weather. Register by Oct. 14 to reserve your spots.
Cost and registration
For each event, the cost of attendance for Sanctuary members is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and $4 for children ages 2-17. For non-members, admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and students, and $6 for children ages 2-17.
