John Ball Zoo: Grand Rapids Lantern Festival; April 10 thru June 16 (Wednesday thru Sunday, 7:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.)

The Grand Rapids Lantern Festival at John Ball Zoo is so cool it is hard to describe. Dozens of handmade illuminated lanterns in a zillion shapes, colors, and sizes – some spinning, sparkling, strobing, and glowing – all through a one-mile tour at the Zoo.  These lanterns tell the intersecting stories of wildlife and Asian culture, and you’ll be blown away by the large dragon tunnel that will greet you at the front of the Zoo. John Ball Zoo is the only place in Michigan where you can witness these mesmerizing works of art, and tickets are required. They are available online and sold by half-hour time slots from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. (an insider tip – the darker the better!).

W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary- Earth Day Celebration, April 21, 9:00-  5:00 p.m.

Earth Day began in 1970.  But the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, was way ahead of its time back in 1927 when W.K. Kellogg set aside this 180 acres of land with the goal of appreciating the natural beauty of the land and offering a refuge for migratory birds. Today the Sanctuary supports diverse wildlife habitats around its location on Wintergreen Lake and offers numerous educational and speaker events, interpretive tours, accessible trails, and fun family activities throughout the year.  This is really a place you want to explore and drink in the beauty of nature, so why not visit the Sanctuary’s free Earth Day celebration on Sunday. Come on out anytime, all day, from 9:00-5:00 p.m.
