There’s a volunteer role for everyone at the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary. Adults interested in learning more about volunteering at the Sanctuary have several upcoming opportunities to do so.
The first session is a meeting focused on working in the Bird Sanctuary’s Resource Center. It will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22. The meeting is free, and registration is requested.
The following sessions will focus on other specific tasks volunteers undertake at the Sanctuary. Register for one or all.
- 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4: Nest box monitoring. Register.
- 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 11: Tour guide training. Register.
- 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 25: Native garden orientation. Register.
People interested in volunteering to assist the MSU Department of Forestry’s W.K. Kellogg Experimental Forest with maple syrup production are invited to an in-person training from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Kellogg Forest Classroom. The meeting will introduce prospective volunteers to the maple syrup production process and provide folks with an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the program with MSU staff and current volunteers. Duties such as checking and collecting sap, boiling sap, and canning syrup will be covered. Volunteers can sign up for specific on-call tasks.
Maple syrup production is weather dependent and runs from February through March. Contact KJ Kettler to register for the maple syrup production training.
