Windmill Island Gardens is excited to announce that Belgium’s own Vlaggendansgroep Symbolica, or Flag Dance Group Symbolica, will make a special one-night appearance at the Island on Monday, July 21 as part of their international tour. The acclaimed group, made up of over 40 talented young men ages 10-18, will perform a free concert for the public that evening from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
The Vlaggendansgroep Symbolica is a dance group made up of over 30 young men ages 10-18 that was formed in 1969 in honor of the former boys’ school Sint-Jan Bergmans College in Genk’s 50th anniversary, and they have been adding a modern twist on traditional Flemish flag dancing ever since, much to the delight of audiences across the world. The free performance at Windmill Island Gardens is being made possible by Avalon School of the Arts, a local dance, music, and theatre school in Holland, Michigan who are hosting the group in Holland from July 19-23 through a partnership with Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan.
“When I was approached by Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp's International office about Avalon serving as a host community for Vlaggendansgroep Symbolica, I was quick to say yes,” said Avalon School of the Arts owner Marie Burkholder. “We have served as an international host community for Blue Lake twice in the past and the friendships and connections we made were really beautiful. Connecting with young dancers from different cultures is such an important and valuable experience, and we are so thankful for this opportunity. It has been wonderful to see the Holland community come together to serve as host families for the boys and young men from Vlaggendansgroep Symbolica. It is their first visit to Holland, and we are so excited to show them all of the beauty and hospitality West Michigan has to offer!”
The entire community is invited to bring their blankets and chairs and enjoy a free hour-long outdoor performance by Flag Dance Group Symbolica this coming Monday, July 21 at 6:00 pm. City of Holland Mayor Nathan Bocks will officially welcome the performers to Holland before the performance begins.
