When the (seemingly) endless rain after a harsh winter had small business owners in downtown Sparta discussing ways to brighten up the Springtime mood, the answer stood out pretty quickly.  Hosting a Cinco de Mayo party, in the street, with local businesses coming together to get behind the May 5th celebration.

“We’ve hosted a parking lot party for a few years to celebrate our Mexican culture and identity,” said restaurant owner Trini Paiz, of Downtown Trini’s and Margarita Joe’s.  “And this year we wanted to bring the whole community together.”  While Cinco de Mayo happens to fall during spring and feels seasonal and almost as a kickoff to warmer-weather festivals, the actual reason behind Cinco de Mayo is about a specific moment in Mexican history as the victory at the Battle of Puebla.

In addition to Mexican food, specialty drinks, and festival atmosphere, the band “Grupo Viento” playing Tejano music following the local musicians “The Denise Anderson Band”.
