Incredible progress has been made in the cleanup of Mackinac Island State Park, with all major roads now open. Members of the Michigan National Guard spent all day Thursday, April 10 and half the day Friday, April 11 on the island assisting in cleanup efforts.

"We’ve made great progress,” said Myron Johnson, Mackinac Island State Park Manager. “Granted there is more work to be done, but our team is doing a fantastic job. We’ll be ready for the season.”

Roads that had been closed earlier this week, such as M-185 north from Arch Rock to British Landing, Arch Rock Road, Sugar Loaf Road, Fort Holmes Road, and Crooked Tree Road, among others, are now open. As such, landmarks such as Arch Rock, Fort Holmes, and Sugar Loaf are now accessible.

Most interior hiking and riding trails remain impassable and are closed at this time. Work on interior trails will continue into the 2025 tourist season.

“First and foremost, we thank our dedicated staff,” said Steve Brisson, Mackinac State Historic Parks Director. “We’re also grateful to the City of Mackinac Island, Mackinac Island Fire Department, Mackinac Island Police Department, the Mackinac Island Community Foundation, the Michigan National Guard, and others in helping us get so much of Mackinac Island State Park back open so we can welcome guests in a few short weeks.”
