Interactive event highlights science, technology, engineering, art, math
John Ball Zoo is encouraging children to get excited about science, technology, engineering, art and math on STEAM Day, taking place 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. Educators will receive free admission that day to explore the variety of STEAM programs offered at the Zoo.
Local schools and organizations will encourage guests to engage in exciting, hands-on STEAM activities, as Zoo staff highlight how those fields are used in the Zoo every day through conservation work and education programs and by veterinarians and animal keepers.
“At John Ball Zoo, we are passionate about inspiring the next generation of leaders, scientists, educators and conservation advocates to tackle challenges impacting our natural world in creative ways,” said Rhiannon Mulligan, education manager at John Ball Zoo. “STEAM Day is an excellent opportunity for the children in our community to deepen their passions for science, technology, engineering, art and math and connect with wildlife in meaningful ways.”
STEAM Day will feature the West Michigan Center for Arts and Technology (WMCAT), Van Andel Institute for Education and Grand Rapids Symphony. The Symphony will provide an instrument discovery station so kids can try their hand at playing different instruments.
There will be photographs with the Michigan Autobots from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the Ice Guru will engage visitors with an interactive electronic art display from 12 to 2 p.m. The Eclectic String Music Ensemble (ESME) will perform from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Zoo will set up stations throughout its campus promoting its education programs and animal activities throughout the day.
Additional STEAM Day partners include Frederik Meijer Gardens, Air Zoo and Grand Rapids Christian Schools Robotics Teams.
Tickets for STEAM Day are available online or at John Ball Zoo. Teachers will receive free admission with a valid school ID presented at the ticketing window.
