John Ball Zoo is offering the chance to celebrate Earth Day in a way that’s never been done before with the inaugural Wild Strides 5K.

On the evening of April 22, Earth Day, this one-of-a-kind event will take participants through the Zoo grounds, past the Grand Rapids Lantern Festival path and along nearby trails. Those taking part will be raising money to support animal conservation work at the Zoo, staying healthy and celebrating Earth Day all at the same time.

“We could not be more excited for this unique event. This will be a truly special night for all those taking part and one they won’t soon forget,” said Amy Stockero, John Ball Zoo’s vice president of development. “Running alongside the lanterns, the animals and hundreds of fellow community members all there supporting animal conservation will be a completely new experience. I encourage people to sign up early because tickets are going fast.”

The Zoo will host both a 5K race and a Kids Fun Run. Those participating in the 5K race will receive a race t-shirt, a finishers medal and a ticket to attend the popular 2025 Lantern Festival. Those taking part in the Kids Fun Run will receive a race t-shirt and a finishers medal.

The half-mile Kids Fun Run begins at 6 p.m. The 5K starts at 7 p.m. for runners and at 7:10 p.m. for walkers and those pushing strollers.

The cost for the Kids Fun Run is $20. The cost for the 5K is $50.

The Zoo encourages runners, walkers, families and conservation enthusiasts to all consider attending to support the Zoo’s mission of saving wildlife and wild places.

When you register, the site will automatically create a personal fundraising page for the race to support the Zoo’s mission of conservation.
