The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station is hosting a hands-on workshop to teach waterfront property owners how to improve their shorelines and support lake health.

The Natural Shoreline Workshop is slated for 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 10, in the KBS Carriage House, located at 3700 E. Gull Lake Drive, Hickory Corners, MI.

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore planting options, see real-life demonstrations, and connect with fellow property owners over lunch. They’ll be able to work with experts to design a personalized shoreline landscape for their properties and leave with some native plants from Kalamazoo Area Wild Ones to kickstart their projects

Presenters and partners

Erick Elgin, a limnologist and water resources educator with MSU Extension, and Julia Kirkwood, a senior environmental quality analyst with the Michigan Department of Environmental Great Lakes and Energy, will both give talks during the workshop.

The Natural Shoreline Workshop is being held at KBS in partnership with the Gull Lake Quality Organization; Michigan State University Extension; the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy; and Kalamazoo Area Wild Ones.

The cost to attend is $25 for Gull Lake Quality Organization members, $35 for Kellogg Bird Sanctuary or Manor House members, and $50 for non-members. Register by July 8 at bit.ly/kbs-shoreline-workshop2025.
