Paul Taffanel: Quintet for Wind Instruments
Darius Milhaud: King Rene’s Chimney
Jacques Ibert: Three Short Pieces for Wind Quintet
At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th, while many European composers focused on building larger and larger cathedrals of sound or appealing to nationalist sentiments, French composers engaged in a quiet revolution of developing new timbres, harmonic colors, and forms in their compositions. Your HSO wind quintet performs three pieces representative of this experimental and influential period in musical history: the romantically influenced quintet by flute virtuoso Paul Taffanel, a collection of witty impressionistic snapshots by Darius Milhaud, and the joyful quintet of Jacques Ibert.
