Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) have announced that Grand Haven is one of nine communities across the state awarded a Main Street Vibrancy Grant, receiving $15,000 to support placemaking enhancements in its historic downtown. The funding is part of the state’s Make It in Michigan initiative, designed to foster economic vitality through vibrant and inclusive public spaces.
“Michigan’s future depends on creating vibrant, welcoming places where people want to build their lives,” said Governor Whitmer. “These Main Street Vibrancy grants will strengthen our communities and help us build a Michigan where everyone can thrive.”
Grand Haven Main Street will use the awarded funds as part of its broader Vibrant Spaces Initiative, a multi-phase project focused on transforming underused areas into inclusive, attractive, and functional public spaces. The initiative includes the installation of backless benches, seasonal banners, accessible tables with built-in chess boards, new wayfinding signage, bike racks, and bike repair stations—helping
create a more welcoming and navigable experience across Downtown, Hilltop, and Centertown.
“This investment supports a long-term community vision to connect our downtown neighborhoods and provide spaces that encourage people to linger, explore, and feel a sense of belonging,” said Chandi Pape, Executive Director of Grand Haven Main Street DDA. “We heard from residents, businesses, and visitors—what’s missing isn’t just beauty, but comfort, accessibility, and intentional design. This grant is a catalyst for making that vision a reality.”
The Vibrant Spaces Initiative was developed through months of community input, data collection, and support from the National Main Street Center. It aligns with the Grand Haven Main Street Transformation Strategy, which prioritizes Active Living and Community Gathering over the next 5 years.
While the Vibrancy Grant is a critical first step, the full project budget totals $175,000. Additional funds are being secured through public-private partnerships, grassroots fundraising, and grant opportunities including a pending application for the T-Mobile Hometown Grant and additional grant and crowdfunding opportunities.
“We’ve already seen strong community momentum,” added Pape. “We raised over $6,600 in less than 24 hours for placemaking in our First Block Social District. That level of support shows people believe in building a downtown that reflects who we are—welcoming, walkable, and always in season.”
