Tibbits Plaza and South Hanchett Street in downtown Coldwater will celebrate the many cultures invested in the community as the third annual Cultural Jubilee brings together music, dance, food, vendors and fun-filled activities from soccer and a bounce house to a community drum circle on Saturday, May 16, from 1 to 6pm.
Organized by Coldwater Community Center the event is sponsored by Meijer, Coldwater Board of Public Utilities, Branch County Community Foundation, Coldwater Main Street, Michigan Gas Utilities, Coldwater Sunrise Rotary, Consumers Energy, Early Bird Exchange Club, Clemens Food Group and Altrusa.
Entertainment for this year’s Cultural Jubilee will be presented on the terrace and in the street in front of Tibbits Opera House. It will include Arab Dance performed by Samer – Dabke, Spanish Flamenco Dance by Ballet Folklorico, and Yemeni Traditional Dance by Yemeni American Community Members. The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatami will present a Pow Wow Exhibition and also lead a participatory drum circle and land acknowledgment with the community. Finally, Haitian music and song will be performed by Sound of Haiti.
Meira will perform as DJ and host for the Cultural Jubilee with her music selections celebrating the many cultures represented in our community filling in between the performances.
At the south end of Hanchett Street members of Coldwater High School Soccer team will participate in a Futsal 3-on-3 Soccer tournament and demonstration.
Organizations assisting the Coldwater Community Center include Branch District Library, Tibbits Opera House, AIRA of Coldwater, Coldwater Main Street and Branch County Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence.
The Cultural Jubilee started from the Cultivating Community Celebration in 2022. In 2023, community organizations created the street fair event celebrating the cultural diversity of the area and featuring music, food, displays, vendors and more.
