Hear ye, hear ye! The Muskegon Museum of History and Science invites the community to join in a royally fun celebration in honor of its favorite mastodon at Moxie's Medieval Merriment, a birthday bash fit for a prehistoric icon on August 22, 2026.
Moxie, the museum's beloved mastodon and one of its most iconic figures, has delighted visitors of all ages for years, sparking curiosity about Muskegon County's prehistoric past and the Ice Age creatures that once roamed the region. Each year, the museum marks Moxie’s birthday with a themed celebration, and this year's medieval theme promises a full day of imagination, learning, and fun for the whole family.
Guests of all ages are invited to step back in time and enjoy medieval-themed games, crafts, and activities in celebration of Moxie's special day. Visitors can try their hand at knightly challenges, create their own coat of arms, and take part in other hands-on activities designed to bring the spirit of the medieval era to life. The event will also feature birthday treats and festivities designed to delight young knights, princesses, nobles, and adventurers alike.
"Moxie has become such a beloved part of our museum family, and every year we love finding a new way to celebrate," said Volunteer and Event Coordinator Marci Dalm. "Celebrations like this one give us a chance to bring the museum to life in a new way each year. It's a wonderful opportunity for families to make memories together while learning more about the museum and the incredible history it holds."
Medieval costumes are encouraged, but not required, for all who wish to join the royal fun. Families are invited to come dressed as their favorite knight, princess, noble, or adventurer, or simply come as they are to enjoy the festivities.
The event is free for Lakeshore Museum Center members and Muskegon County residents. Admission for out-of-county guests is $5.
