Kalamazoo's citywide celebration of innovation, arts, culture, music, and community expands after a first year built in 60 days

269 Fest is coming back. The festival returns Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 27, 2026, with ten days of programming across downtown Kalamazoo, showcasing all the amazing things here.

The idea behind the festival has not changed. Kalamazoo already produces an extraordinary amount of programming every fall. 269 Fest gathers it under one brand, on one calendar, in downtown, so residents and visitors can move easily from a concert to a pitch competition to a block party to a gallery opening without ever needing to leave downtown.

"Last year we found out something we already suspected, which is that this city has more going on than most people realize," said Bobby J. Hopewell, former Mayor of Kalamazoo and now President and CEO of Kabundant. "The work was never about inventing something new. It was about pointing at what our neighbors have been building for years and giving people one week to actually go see it. Year two, we get to enhance that even further."

Programming runs across three tracks. Innovation covers the industries where this region competes nationally, plus the founders and researchers driving them. Arts, Culture, and Music carries the theaters, musicians, comedians, artists, and makers who define the city's creative identity. Community is the invitation to engage with our city, from neighborhood activations to family programming.

"Link exists to connect people to opportunity in Kalamazoo and to demonstrate this place is worth investing in," said Zack Wilson, President of Link Kalamazoo. "269 Fest is the clearest version of that concept we have. It is ten days where you can walk from one end of downtown to the other and understand why people are betting on this place. If you are new here, or you are deciding whether to be, this is the week to experience the heart of this community."

A few spotlights on the calendar

  • Canadiana Fest: Can-Am Peace Jam (September 19). A full day of Canadian music, food, culture, and sport at Arcadia Creek Festival Place, 1pm to 11pm. It is the last major festival at Arcadia Creek before reconstruction begins, closing out more than 30 years at the venue.

  • Startup Zoo Southwest Michigan Entrepreneurship Summit (September 21 - 22). The region's flagship entrepreneurship gathering brings founders, funders, and operators together for a day that consistently punches above the city's size.

  • Startup Zoo PitchMI (September 22). Michigan entrepreneurs compete live, on stage, in front of a downtown audience, to get a chance to win $250,000.

  • Burdick's Bar & Grill Birthday Bash (September 23). Burdick's turns one, and the celebration runs from 11am to midnight with food and drink specials, birthday fun, and more throughout the day.

  • Link Kalamazoo Scavenger Hunt (September 24). A citywide hunt designed to push young professionals into corners of downtown they have walked past for years and never entered.

  • Sounds of the Zoo Second Line Parade (September 25). A New Orleans style second line moving through downtown, brass and all. No ticket, no venue, no barrier to entry. You hear it and you follow it. Full programming is at soundsofthezoo.com

  • WMU Football vs. Boise State (September 26). Western Michigan hosts Boise State at Waldo Stadium on Day 269 itself. It is the first ever meeting between the two programs, and the university will honor its 2016 MAC Championship and Cotton Bowl team during the game.

269 Fest is coordinated by a collaborative group of partners including Link Kalamazoo, Greenleaf Hospitality Group, Southwest Michigan First, Discover Kalamazoo, Startup Zoo, Sounds of the Zoo, Western Michigan University, Kabundant, and many others.
