Mitten Brewing Company
The Mitten Brewing Company is a microbrewery and pizzeria founded in November 2012 by lifelong friends and homebrewers Chris Andrus and Max Trierweiler. Located in Engine House No. 9, a Victorian-era firehouse and treasured city landmark, the Mitten's taproom was painstakingly restored to its original appearance by the owners over the course of a year.
Andrus and Trierweiler_s love of baseball and desire to open the first West Side brewery since Prohibition contributed to the company_s unique vintage baseball theme and setting. Inside the taproom, imagery and memorabilia from turn-of-the-century professional baseball teams blend seamlessly with the repurposed original materials and features of Engine House No. 9. Names of popular beers like Country Strong IPA, Triple Crown Brown and Peanuts and Crackerjack Porter are a nod to Detroit_s baseball tradition.
The Mitten_s vision is simple: create unique examples of classic beer and pizza styles and not be distracted by trends. This continued focus on quality control and innovation was recognized by MLive Media Group, who named The Mitten Brewing Company Michigan_s Best Newcomer in 2013.
By renovating the upstairs loft and adding a two-level exterior deck, the brewery_s seating capacity increased from 65 to 207 in 2014. Early 2015 also saw the addition of a second brewing facility, located across the street from the taproom. The new 20 BBL brewhouse more than triples The Mitten_s brewing capacity, and cements the company_s commitment to the West Side for years to come. These improvements contributed to The Mitten being named a finalist in the Grand Rapids Business Journal_s 2014 Newsmaker of the Year awards. Additionally, Andrus and Trierweiler were recognized by the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce as the recipients of the 2015 Young Entrepreneur of The Year award.
The Mitten Brewing Company is extremely proud of its charitable giving program. Since opening in 2012, the company has raised more than $90,000 for local organizations in need. In addition, they recently started an employee volunteer program that enables staff members to provide hands-on help to our nonprofit partners. The Mitten was humbled to receive the West Michigan chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professional's 2015 President's Award in recognition of its commitment to fundraising.
