Explore Muskegon history, legends, and lore—and get your steps in—with the Lakeshore Museum Center’s 2024 walking tours of downtown Muskegon.
The Legends and Lore Tour will seek to uncover answers and the facts to some of Muskegon’s most colorful stories. For example: what happened when a Muskegon detective met a gangster on the run? Who planted bombs in downtown Muskegon? What caused a massive lumbering strike and a near-deadly confrontation between workers and a mill owner? In June and August, the morning tour will be the Legends and Lore Tour, as well as the afternoon tour in July.
On the Historic Walking Tour, participants will learn about the past and current uses of many of Muskegon’s historic businesses and residences, including the McCraken building and the Century Club. Walkers will learn what life was like for the Spaniola family as they operated their market on Western Ave., along with other interesting stories about historic downtown Muskegon. The morning tour in July will be the Historic Tour, as well as the afternoon tours in June and August.
Participants can expect to walk about one mile on the 90-minute tours. Tours are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the following dates:
-
June 18, 21
-
July 9, 12, 16, 19
