January in Michigan may feel as far as possible from Memorial Day weekend, vacations and summer cookouts, but Tibbits Opera House is capturing a bit of that spirit as they host a screening of The Great Outdoors, starring John Candy and Dan Aykroyd, on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at the historic venue.

When Chet Ripley (Candy), his wife Connie and their sons arrive at their lakefront cabin in Pechoggin, Wisconsin for a relaxing summer vacation, those plans are quickly ruined by the arrival of Connie’s sister and her husband (Aykroyd), along with their twin daughters. As Chet and his brother-in-law clash over everything from vacation activities to parenting styles, the trip spirals into a series of wild animal encounters, water sports disasters and family tensions galore.

More than just a movie, Tibbits also welcomes moviegoers to be there early for a special pre-show picnic—indoors, of course—featuring hot dogs and chips and starting at 1:00 p.m. Both the picnic lunch and tickets for the film are by donation.

It might be months until Memorial Day, summer vacations and cookouts, but Tibbits invites moviegoers to enjoy the feeling, laugh along with the film and enjoy a hot dog along the way.

The Great Outdoors is rated PG for strong language and suggestive material.

Tickets for the film are by donation, and can be reserved at Tibbits.org, by calling 517-278-6029, or by visiting the Tibbits administration office at 93 West Chicago St., Coldwater.
