As you step outside the Colonial Michilimackinac Visitor’s Center, you begin to walk back in time. The Mackinac Bridge fades further into the distance behind you as you walk the worn dirt path to the palisade walls. You pass a voyageur at work near his canoes, and come across the brass cannon, glistening in the sun. Finally, you enter the massive gates of Fort Michilimackinac and step into the bustling community in the year 1779, where tensions were high as the American Revolution headed west.
Treasures from the past come to life here, a site that has been reconstructed based on historic maps and more than 60 years of archaeological excavations. You’ll meet voyageurs, British soldiers, French-Canadian merchant families and more stationed throughout the fort. These interpreters will provide demonstrations, tours, and answer questions about the site.
Colonial Michilimackinac is also home to North America’s longest ongoing archaeological dig, taking place throughout the summer. Stop by the site and talk with trained archaeologists and watch history unearthed daily.
Michilimackinac is also home to several amazing events throughout the summer, including unforgettable “Fire at Night” events (watch the cannon fired at dusk out over Lake Michigan!), Maritime Michilimackinac events, where the historic canoes will be launched onto the lake, Fort Fright, our popular October event, and A Colonial Christmas, held in early December.
Colonial Michilimackinac is located on the shore of the Straits of Mackinac, at the base of the Mackinac Bridge in Mackinaw City. Enjoy stunning views of the bridge, the straits, the Upper Peninsula, and Mackinac Island. Day, combination, and season tickets are available. Colonial Michilimackinac is open daily through October 8, and select days through October 23.
