The W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary is kicking off winter with a carnival day in January and monthly themed activities set up inside the Overlook building. Rubber Ducky Carnival In playful recognition of National Rubber Ducky Day, the Sanctuary will hold a Rubber Ducky Carnival from noon to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13. Visitors can try some duck-themed games for a chance to win prizes. Additionally, Sanctuary staff will be sharing some facts about ducks that overwinter in Michigan and how they stay warm. Carnival activities are free with the price of admission. Overlook Building themes  Each month this winter, the Overlook will host themed activities in a cozy, indoor space with beautiful views of Wintergreen Lake. The Overlook is located along the Sanctuary’s 3/4-mile Paved Path, and the activities are ideal for children ages 3-6. Winter themes are:
  • January — Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Featuring an animal rehab center in the dynamic play area and a wild animal footprint rubbing craft.
  • February — Geology Lab Featuring “a day as a geologist” in the dynamic play area, a duck stamp design craft, and information on the Great Backyard Bird Count set for Feb. 16-19.
  • March — Great Big Sky Featuring “a day as a meteorologist” in the dynamic play area, a weather book craft, and information on the spring bird migration.
