Paddle Antrim is proud to announce that Executive Director Deana Jerdee has been appointed to the State Waterways Commission by Gretchen Whitmer.

Jerdee will serve as a member of the general public for a term commencing September 19, 2026, and expiring September 18, 2029. She succeeds Craig Lehrke, whose term is expiring. The appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Michigan Senate.

The Michigan State Waterways Commission is a seven-member advisory board that works with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on the use of dedicated funds, provided by boaters, for the acquisition, development, and maintenance of public harbors, boating access sites, and certain locks and dams. The Commission plays a critical role in ensuring Michigan’s waterways remain safe, accessible, and well managed for residents and visitors alike.

As Executive Director of Paddle Antrim, Jerdee has led efforts to create non-motorized access and promote stewardship and safety on Michigan’s waterways. She played an integral role in the creation of the Chain of Lakes Water Trail, establishing Northern Michigan’s only state-designated Pure Michigan Water Trail. During her tenure at Paddle Antrim, Jerdee has worked with local governments to secure over $1.3 million to develop key water trail access sites and maintain the trail. In recognition of her leadership and dedication to Michigan’s waterways, she received the 2021 Verlen Kruger Award, which honors individuals who foster stewardship of treasured water resources through paddle sports.

“I am deeply honored to be appointed to the State Waterways Commission,” said Jerdee. “Michigan’s waterways are central to our economy, our environment, and our quality of life. I look forward to bringing the perspective of water trail communities and non-motorized users to the Commission, while working collaboratively to ensure our harbors and access sites remain safe, welcoming, and sustainable for generations to come.”

Also reappointed to the Commission is Steve Remias of Shelby Township, who will continue serving as a representative of the marine trades industry for a term commencing September 19, 2026, and expiring September 18, 2029. Remias is a member of the Macomb County Chamber of Commerce and previously served as president and chief executive officer of MacRay Harbor. He is a member of the Michigan Boating Industry Association Hall of Fame for his work on the state’s Clean Marinas program.

Jerdee holds a Bachelor of Science in biology and environmental science from Carroll University and brings decades of experience in environmental leadership, nonprofit management, and water trail development to the Commission.

“Deana’s appointment is a tremendous honor and a testament to her expertise and passion for Michigan’s waterways,” said Paddle Antrim Board President Mindy Theis. “Her voice will bring the perspective of non-motorized water trail users while continuing to champion responsible stewardship and access for all.”

Paddle Antrim congratulates Deana on this significant appointment and looks forward to her continued leadership at both the state and local levels to protect and enhance Michigan’s treasured waterways.
