Learning how to keep a nature journal of your observations can help deepen your connection to art, science, and place. An upcoming four-week, in-person workshop hosted by the W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary offers an introduction to ecological principles and drawing techniques.

The interactive series, Blending Art and Science, will begin with a 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. session on Saturday, Aug. 3, and will continue from 6 to 8 p.m. on three consecutive Tuesdays: Aug. 6, 13 and 20. Register at bit.ly/kbs-nature-journaling-2024  to reserve your spot.

The course is partly an introduction to ecology and partly an art class. KBS scientists will introduce participants to ecology at several spatial scales, including landscapes, communities and species. Then, participants will learn art techniques using colored pencils to make scientific and artistic observations about nature at different scales.

Each class will begin with a presentation on the ecology of native plants and landscapes. Participants will spend the remainder of class learning how to document their observations of nature through drawing and nature journaling.
