At the time of her launch, the Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship sailing the Great Lakes, and today her legend continues as the largest shipwreck on Lake Superior. The tragic loss of the mighty Fitz and her entire crew in 1975 has captivated audiences for decades, in part thanks to Gordon Lightfoot’s ballad, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitgerald”. Join the Michigan Maritime Museum in commemorating the 48 th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald on November 10 th at 7:00pm. In partnership with the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, we will be live streaming the ceremony from Whitefish Point in our R.B. Annis Gallery. This ceremony includes the traditional ringing of the bell 30 times, and a guest speaker. There will also be a special display of materials from our collections, and our curatorial specialist Eric Harmsen will be on hand to answer questions. This event is FREE for the public with the doors opening at 6:00pm for Museum members and 6:30pm for non-members. Following this event, on November 15 th at 6:30pm, the Michigan Maritime Museum will host guest speaker Ric Mixter for The Edmund Fitzgerald Investigations. This exciting segment of our Working Waterfronts Lecture Series will cover Ric’s 20 years of research into the mighty Fitz, and his collection of the largest film archives of Fitgerald related material. Ric Mixter is one of the most sought out maritime historians in the Midwest, and his documentary on the Fitzgerald is considered to be the most comprehensive available. "Sharing the Fitzgerald story with Michigan's Maritime Museum is extremely special for me,” said Ric. “The museum is dedicated to our amazing maritime past and I can't think of a better place to share what I have found about the Fitz." Lectures are proudly sponsored by the Nielsen-Wells Grant Fund and Mike and Susan Smith. Tickets for our lecture series are free for museum members and $10 for non-members.
