Is John Ball Zoo’s newest addition a boy or a girl? The pygmy hippo calf has kept the public guessing, but not for much longer.

John Ball Zoo is hosting a pygmy hippo calf gender reveal event at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11. The 11-pound calf was born on Sept. 3, to first-time parents Penelope and Jahari, and is the first pygmy hippo to be born at John Ball Zoo. Pygmy hippos are an endangered species, with fewer than 2,500 estimated to be in the wild.

Jahari, the Zoo’s 11-year-old pygmy hippo and new father, will assist John Ball Zoo in revealing the gender of the calf.

Media are invited to cover the event.
