Gift from Bill and Bea Idema Foundation to contribute to education, wildlife conservation

John Ball Zoo is humbled to announce a $15 million donation, the single largest philanthropic contribution in the history of the organization, that will allow the nonprofit to further invest in its African expansion.

The multimillion-dollar gift comes from the Bill and Bea Idema Foundation and will support the largest animal habitat in the Zoo: a state-of-the-art giraffe habitat. The new exhibit will include a winding forested path leading to a panoramic African savannah environment and feature opportunities to feed and view giraffes, ostriches and other animals, as well as space for educational engagement.

The expansive new space is set to open in 2028, offering unforgettable experiences and showcasing world-class animal care in a habitat designed to mirror a natural savannah environment.

“We are incredibly honored by this generous gift from the Bill and Bea Idema Foundation, which has been a longtime champion of conservation, education and community enrichment in West Michigan,” said Peter D’Arienzo, CEO of John Ball Zoo. “Thank you to the Foundation for its continued support of our commitment to save wildlife and wild places. This expansion will be a powerful symbol of conservation in action, and it will connect children and families with one of our most iconic species in unforgettable ways.”

Bill and Bea Idema were deeply committed to supporting schools, organizations, and initiatives that enrich the lives of children, families, and the broader community — and this gift is a powerful continuation of that legacy.

At John Ball Zoo, the Idema’s generosity has already brought to life the Idema Funicular and the Idema Forest Realm. The gift for the African expansion means the Foundation has given a remarkable $20 million cumulative gift to this fundraising campaign, including its $5 million lead gift to the North American River Otters Habitat.

Expansion of the African area at the Zoo is one of the projects included in the organization’s 10-year Master Plan, which outlines the development and direction of John Ball Zoo throughout the next decade to expand access, make a greater community impact and showcase its sustainability efforts.

The African Expansion reflects the Zoo’s commitment to inspire meaningful connections to wildlife while working to advance conservation both locally and globally. The world’s giraffe population is declining due to habitat loss, poaching and the impacts of climate change. The Zoo will participate in Species Survival Plans for the giraffes through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the organization that accredits the Zoo and is recognized for upholding the world’s highest standards in animal care, welfare, conservation and education.

The gift was made to the Zoo’s “Rising to New Heights” capital campaign, the most ambitious fundraising effort in John Ball Zoo’s history, designed to transform the Zoo’s physical landscape and deepen its impact as a leader in conservation, education and community engagement. It is anchored by major capital projects, including new, immersive habitats for giraffes and otters, as well as critical infrastructure enhancements like a sustainable parking lot.

This transformative gift has enabled John Ball Zoo to launch the next phase of the capital campaign, which will include expanded public engagement and exciting naming opportunities for supporters. As they move forward, the community will be invited to play a more active role in shaping the future of the Zoo. More details will be shared soon on how individuals and organizations can get involved in this once-in-a-generation effort.
