We are delighted to announce that the Hackley & Hume Historic Site has won the 2025 State History Award for Restoration and Preservation from the Historical Society of Michigan. The award recognizes the preservation of the three historic structures that are essential to Muskegon’s history.
Every year, the Historical Society of Michigan awards individuals and organizations who have contributed to collecting, preserving, and promoting state and local history. The Hackley & Hume Historic Site was built in 1889 by lumber barons and business partners Charles Hackley and Thomas Hume.
In a press release, the Historical Society of Michigan praised the Hackley and Hume Historic Site project for its technical excellence in historic preservation and restoration. The award highlights several major restoration projects completed or underway in recent years:
-
Stained Glass Window Restoration (2022):
Restored 15 stained-glass windows across the Hackley and Hume Houses. More than $60,000 was raised through the Annual Appeal, donor match efforts, and individual contributions.
-
Hume North Chimney Restoration (2022):
A full restoration of the critically deteriorated north chimney was completed with the help of funds raised by the Women’s Division Chamber of Commerce through a community yard sale.
-
Reroofing Project (2024–2025):
The cedar shake roof on the Hackley House was replaced in 2024. The Hume House and City Barn are scheduled for reroofing in 2025. Funding includes a $50,000 grant from the Michigan Arts & Culture Council, nearly $38,000 in private donations, and a $2 million state appropriation.
-
Hackley Front Porch Rebuild Project (Ongoing):
Ten porches across the two homes, last rebuilt in the mid-1990s, are scheduled for full reconstruction. Four porches provide visitor access and are prioritized. Work will be funded in part by the remaining state appropriation.
-
Window Restoration Project (Ongoing):
Of the 172 windows across the site’s three structures, 32 are in critical condition. A $50,000 grant has been awarded to begin this essential preservation work.
“We are grateful to receive this award from the Historical Society of Michigan,” said Executive Director Melissa Horton. “It means so much to us because it honors not just the craftsmanship and care poured into these historic homes, but also the decades of community support and belief in preserving Muskegon's story for generations to come.”
