Step into the shadows of the Victorian era and experience history in a whole new light—by candlelight. The Hackley and Hume Historic Site invites the community to its 2025 Obituary Tours, a one-of-a-kind event exploring the fascinating (and sometimes chilling) ways families of the past honored life, loss, and remembrance.

Guests will journey through the lavishly restored Hackley and Hume homes on Friday, October 17, and Saturday, October 18, during one of two sessions each evening: 6:30–8:00 p.m. or 8:30–10:00 p.m. Surrounded by the flicker of candlelight, visitors will uncover stories of Muskegon’s past residents, hear about Victorian mourning traditions, and gain a deeper understanding of how death was woven into daily life during the 19th century.

“The Obituary Tours offer a powerful glimpse into the emotional depth and cultural practices of the Victorian period,” said Historic Sites Director Erin Schmitz. “By exploring how families grieved and remembered their loved ones, we bring a deeply human perspective to the history of these homes.”

Tickets are $25 for non-members and $20 for museum members, and space is limited to ensure a personal and immersive experience. Secure your spot at bit.ly/ObituaryTour.

Guests should check in at the City Barn (carriage house) located between the Hackley and Hume Houses. Free parking is available along Webster Avenue and 6th Street. To ensure the best experience for all participants, intoxicated patrons will be refused admission without a refund.
