Canna-curious travelers to Michigan have questions about our legal cannabis regulations. Many cannabis-consuming Michigan residents may not think about the concerns that travelers from out of state have when it comes to purchasing or consuming cannabis legally while visiting.

When it comes to buying cannabis from a licensed dispensary in Michigan, you'll need to show a valid, unexpired government-issued ID, commonly a driver's license or passport, proving you are an adult 21+. Qualified patients ages 18-20 with a medical card should call a local dispensary to see how they handle medical cards, as many dispensaries are recreational-sale only.

All Dunegrass Co. locations accept cash or PIN debit cards for payment, a fairly uncommon feature in Michigan cannabis retail. Although some banks still block cannabis purchases via debit cards, most dispensaries offer an ATM on-site.

A great dispensary will have knowledgeable and friendly budtenders who will help you pick out products. There are a lot of different ways to consume cannabis these days, so don't be shy to explore options and ask questions at the dispensary to find the best fit for you.

Recreational cannabis use is legal in Michigan for adults aged 21+, but that doesn't mean you can light up anywhere. It is still illegal to use cannabis in any form (smoking, edibles, vapes, dabs, tinctures, capsules. etc) in public. This means that you cannot consume cannabis at the beach, on a boat in a Michigan waterway, or anywhere in public view. However, the owner's consent allows consumption on private property, like some vacation rentals. Cannabis use is also permitted at licensed consumption lounges and licensed consumption events.

Cannabis is still a Schedule 1 controlled substance under federal law, which means it is federally illegal to transport cannabis over state lines, but it's perfectly legal to drive with a legal amount of cannabis in your vehicle in Michigan - as long as the cannabis is kept in a sealed container or in the trunk of your car, out of the reach of the passengers and the driver. Adults may possess up to 2.5 ounces flower or up to 15 grams of concentrates. Anything over that could put you at risk of getting a civil infraction.
