Join former NASA historian Glen Swanson as he talks about the life and times of Grand Rapid’s native son Roger Bruce Chaffee, an astronaut who would have flown aboard America’s first manned Apollo mission. Sadly, his life was cut short by a tragic fire that broke out inside the spacecraft on January 27, 1967, caused by a routine launch-pad systems test. The lessons learned from that fatal accident paved the way for the eventual success of the Apollo program’s six successful lunar landing missions that allowed twelve men to walk on the surface of the moon.
