St. Cecilia Music Center Opens its 140th Season with GRAMMY® Award-winning Internationally Renowned Folk Musician Rhiannon Giddens on September 19, 2023

St. Cecilia Music Center (SCMC) is proud to present GRAMMY® Award-winning internationally renowned Rhiannon Giddens to open SCMC’s 140-year milestone Anniversary Season of Music. Rhiannon Giddens has performed at SCMC twice and this third time will perform with her band on September 19, 2023, to kick off SCMC’s 2023 – 2024 season.

Rhiannon Giddens has made a singular, iconic career out of stretching her brand of folk music, with its miles-deep historical roots and contemporary sensibilities, into just about every field imaginable. A two-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer and instrumentalist, MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient, and composer of opera, ballet, and film, Giddens has centered her work around the mission of lifting up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been overlooked or erased, and advocating for a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins through art. As Pitchfork once said, “few artists are so fearless and so ravenous in their exploration”—a journey that has led to NPR naming her one of its 25 Most Influential Women Musicians of the 21st Century and to American Songwriter calling her “one of the most important musical minds currently walking the planet.” She most recently won a Grammy Award for Best Folk Album for They’re Calling Me Home, which she made with multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi.

Executive & Artistic Director of SCMC Cathy Holbrook says, “In September 1883, nine Grand Rapids women started the St. Cecilia Society – an organization created to promote the appreciation, study and performance of music in order to enrich the lives of the residence of West Michigan. 140 years later St. Cecilia Music Center (SCMC) upholds that same mission by bringing renowned chamber, jazz and folk musicians on three concert series, hosting numerous music education programs through the School of Music and maintaining the historic building at 24 Ransom NE that the visionary women built in 1894.

SCMC is pleased to welcome a current visionary woman in the music world, Rhiannon Giddens, to help us celebrate this milestone anniversary.”
