Pandemic Doesn’t Slow Traverse City’s Newest Short Term Rental Condos

Opening a new business in good times is stressful, opening in the middle of a pandemic brings a new level of stress. That’s exactly what happened with the opening of Traverse City’s newest luxury short-term rental condominium, 539 Bay Street. So far, the results have exceeded expectations.

“The reaction from our guests has been fantastic. They love it,” said Rob Rodenroth, president of Superior Hospitality, the property’s management company. “They love that every room has a great view of Grand Traverse Bay, lots of space and comfortable, custom-made beds.”

Opening of the boutique rental project was delayed about a year due to accessing building supplies and furnishings during COVID. “We also had owners that were patient and willing to wait to make sure the building was exactly how they envisioned,” said Rodenroth.

539 Bay Street became the newest vacation rental building to open in Traverse City over the past year. With 15 units that each have at least 1,400 square feet of room, developers are going after guests looking for rooms for more than just a night or two. “We’re not appealing to transient guests,” said Jonathan Pack, Superior Hospitality, director of operations. “Mostly these are affluent families spending perhaps a week or more in the area. They want to overlook the bay and still be close to all the activities in downtown.”

539 Bay Street competes in the AirBNB arena but brings high-tech safety and security features along with keyless entry, private parking and a professionally managed building.

The facility has become one of the newest members of Traverse City Tourism. It represents a growing trend of short-term rental facilities. “Short term rentals benefit by the work we do to promote the region,” said Traverse City Tourism President, Trevor Tkach (Tah-koch). “539 Bay Street appreciates that when we get the word out that Traverse City is a four-season vacation destination, everyone tied into the hospitality industry benefits from that message.”

539 Bay Street is located across from Bay Bread, south of Grandview Parkway. It sits on property that at one time was a credit union. “The value of this building and our guests not only helps all of Traverse City, but is a great addition to the neighborhood,” said Pack.
