Magic City Grill Fest Announces New Name and Format

Tim Taylor, Chairman of the state’s most beloved barbecue festival, announced a name change and a new format for the culinary festival and barbecue competition which started back in 2019.  The Magic City Egg Fest, which utilized only Big Green Egg as their grills, will be changed to the Magic City Grill Fest.  “For the first three years, the centerpiece of our event and competition has been the Big Green Egg, a widely popular kamado-style grill, smoker and outdoor oven”, said Taylor.  “But the cornerstone of our event is truly the barbecue and the teams that prepare and serve high quality barbecue to our many tasters.”  Additionally, Taylor announced a modification to the cooking rounds to include the ever-popular ribs and chicken rounds but added a “beef sliders round” and an “open round” category where teams can prepare any of their favorite barbecued foods.

“This year it’s BYOG”, said Taylor.  “That’s right, Bring Your Own Grill”.  Teams will be allowed to bring two outdoor grills or smokers as long as they do not use propane or electric.  Depending on the rounds chosen, teams will be provided with ribs from Clemens Food Group, chicken from Miller’s Amish Country Poultry, Waygu ground beef from Vander Farms, slider rolls from Aunt Millie’s Bread, lump charcoal from Black Gold Charcoal and an array of spices and seasonings to include in their various dishes from Meadow Creek Seasonings.

The Magic City Grill Fest will be held at 123 E. State Street in Colon, MI on Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 11:00am to 5:00pm.  Teams of no more than four chefs can sign up for the ribs and chicken rounds but have a choice between the Beef Sliders Round or an open category.  Team fees are $100.00 and includes six slabs of ribs, six whole cut up chickens, ten pounds of Waygu Ground Beef and Aunt Millie’s Slider Buns, lump charcoal and fire starters, and array of spices.  Taster’s tickets are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door until the event is sold out.  All proceeds from the event benefit the Colon American Legion Post 454 who support veterans, their families and the local community.
