Ironman Charity Challenge Raises Over $48,000

Five northwest Michigan charities have together raised over $48,000 as a result of participating in the Ironman Charity Challenge. The Challenge gave the non-profit organizations a chance to fundraise during the race and promote what their organizations do for the community. The Ironman race was held last month in Frankfort and results of the Challenge announced today.

Teams from Single MOMM, Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital, Friends of the Betsie Valley Trail, Munson Manor Hospitality House and Frankfort Lighthouse were invited to participate in the Charity Challenge, an event underwritten by Traverse City Tourism.

“Ironman was such a great fit for Frankfort,” said Traverse City Tourism President, Trevor Tkach (Tah-Koch). “The race introduced a lot of people to the region, and the community was so welcoming to the athletes. We are proud to see these five charities, that are critical to the fabric of the Benzie County community, get a boost from Ironman.”

Single MOMM, which is an organization that helps to mentor single mothers, made the most of the challenge by raising over $35,000. “Ironman gave us an incredible start to our rural expansion initiative,” said Jennifer Finnegan, founder and Executive Director of Single MOMM. “This will enable us to begin new programs and events that will support Single MOMM families throughout Benzie County.”

Charity Challenge athletes were able to compete individually or as a relay team. “The athletes faced the same challenges as everyone who prepared for Ironman, but they faced their challenges knowing they had a higher purpose,” said Tkach. “They were doing great work for the community as well as preparing for a tough physical challenge. It made the reward for completing this race extra sweet”

The Ironman 70.3 Michigan race was held for the first time in Frankfort on September 12th this year. The race attracted thousands of athletes and their supporters from around the country. The 2022 Michigan Ironman race is slated take place on September 11th.
