Tom Dilley, author and expert on Grand Rapids cemeteries, takes a daring, speculative path to consider why around 1900, the Egyptian Revival fashion took hold in Grand Rapids more than in other areas of the country. The brooding Egyptian Revival style in a funerary setting is uncommon in the Midwest and virtually unknown in the South. Tom will explore why three of our four examples of this exotic style of cemetery design (which in the eyes of the religious establishment was pagan and inappropriate for a Christian burial ground) were selected by women who were on their own unconventional paths. This program is co-sponsored by the Greater Grand Rapids Women's History Council, the Grand Rapids Historical Society, and the Grand Rapids Public Library.
