Prior to 1918, Cross Village was one of the largest settlements in northern Michigan—a principal player in the lumbering and commercial fishing industries. Land speculators were advertising that it would be a second Chicago—then it was gone. Learn more about the devastating fire of 1918 that destroyed Cross Village at the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society’s first Harbor History Talk of 2019!

Local historian and artist Jane Cardinal will explore what Cross Village looked like before the fire, when it boasted three hotels, a hospital, merchants of all sorts, saloons and Father Weikamp’s convent. Cardinal’s lecture will take place on Thursday, January 17 at 5:30 pm on the second floor of the Harbor Springs History Museum.

Admission to the talk is $5 for Historical Society members and $10 for non-members. Refreshments will be served. Due to limited seating at the museum, reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made by calling the Historical Society at (231) 526-9771 or emailing info@harborspringshistory.org.
