CLASSICAL
January 11
Marcelo Lehninger, conductor
• BEETHOVEN: Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus
• HAYDN: Symphony No. 89
• MOZART: Symphony No. 39

In the late 18th century, Vienna was the capital city of the music world. Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven each lived and worked there during their careers. Haydn and Mozart, in particular, knew each other well, and each inspired the other. Mozart completed his Symphony No. 39 in 1788 just months after Haydn wrote his Symphony No. 89 the previous year. The youthful Beethoven, who studied briefly under Haydn and almost certainly met Mozart, clearly was influenced and inspired by both masters in his early works. The Grand Rapids Symphony, officially organized on Jan. 11, 1930, celebrates its birthday today, and Haydn’s 89th Symphony recognizes the orchestra’s 89th season.

Concert starts at 10:00 a.m. Complimentary coffee and donut hour begins at 9:00 a.m.
