Leonard Bernstein, conductor, composer, pianist, author and lecturer was one of the most accomplished musicians in modern history. Whether composing for Broadway or for the concert hall, Bernstein’s iconic music is the perfect personification of urban American life in the post-World War II era. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Bernstein’s birth, guest conductor Carl St. Clair, music director of the Pacific Symphony for 28 years, leads the Grand Rapids Symphony in a sampling of Bernstein’s most popular music, most of it composed in the 1950s. American pianist Benjamin Pasternack is soloist for Bernstein’s Symphony No. 2, “Age of Anxiety,” and American coloratura soprano Celena Shafer takes the stage for highlights from West Side Story, Trouble in Tahiti and Arias and Barcarolles. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3, in DeVos Performance Hall, 303 Monroe Ave. NW.
