BEETHOVEN’S 7th
September 14-15
Marcelo Lehninger, conductor
Karen Gomyo, violin
• BERNSTEIN: Divertimento
• BARBER: Concerto for Violin
• BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 7

Beethoven himself conducted the premiere of his Symphony No. 7 at benefit concert for solders wounded in battle. Ever since, Beethoven’s immortal Seventh Symphony has stirred the hearts and inspired the imaginations of listeners for 200 years. In the 2010 movie “The King’s Speech,” the powerful, second movement of Beethoven’s Seventh sets the scene at the film’s climax as King George VI announces on radio that Great Britain had declared war on Nazi Germany. Violinist Karen Gomyo returns as soloist in Samuel Barber’s lyrical and virtuosic Violin Concerto, one of the most frequently performed works of the 20th century. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-15, in DeVos Performance Hall, 303 Monroe Ave. NW. Tickets start at $18 adults, $5 students.
