Book reading "The Old Man and the Tree"
175 Limit Street
Battle Creek, MI 49037
Come in Saturday, March 31 to hear Dick Schlatter read his book "The Old Man and the Tree."
Schlatter, the artist behind the giant Abraham Lincoln made of over 24,000 pennies that took the public vote grand prize at ArtPrize 2017, wrote the book based on a maple tree he had removed from his backyard.
In the book, a man named Fred forms a bond with a tree in his yard, enjoying the tree's shade and natural habitat it gives to animals. But after years of raking up leaves and unclogging gutters due to the tree, Fred has the tree removed out of frustration, to his immediate regret. Schlatter wrote the book hoping to teach kids loyalty and respect, even towards something as simple as a tree.
Schlatter's book reading is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Battle Creek.
