August Activities: Getting Outside and Going Green

Animal Encounters/ Zoos

Explore West Michigan’s wild side with these nature centers, farms, zoos, and other animal encounters!

  • There’s such a great variety of places to visit, get outdoors, and interact with animals around West Michigan! One of my favorites is Lewis Adventure Farm & Zoo in New Era, where you can visit with sloths, meet kangaroos, and have all sorts of outdoor fun! And if you want to visit for a party, they’re celebrating Jeffrey the Camel’s 14th birthday on August 14th with a party and corn roast!

Tempt Your Taste Buds

West Michigan offers lots of foodie fun. You’ll find everything from fresh baked pies to slow roasted bbq, craft brews to French cuisine, and everything in between.

  • You really can find any of your favorite flavors around West Michigan, and there’s lots of opportunities to discover something new as well! One fun one here in Grand Rapids is The Sovengard, which promises tastes of Scandinavia with their own local twist on the dishes. It’s a great farm-to-table dining experience, with a menu that changes with the seasons.

Going Green/Eco Travel

Many West Michigan destinations, businesses, and organizations are making sure to do their part to promote eco-friendly and sustainable practices to conserve energy and minimize environmental impact.

  • It’s great to see more and more local businesses making changes to have a positive impact on the environment, and the Holland Farmers Market is one of those places! They’re a “producers market,” which means the items you’ll find there are grown locally right here in West Michigan, helping you cut back on packaging and emissions from transporting food across the country. You can visit them on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Adventure Travel

Calling all thrill seekers! West Michigan is full of some amazing attractions and destinations for you to scratch the itch for adventure.

  • I love the great variety of adventures you can find in the area! If you’ve got that need for speed, High Caliber Karting and Entertainment in Lansing is a must-visit! They have indoor, electric go-karts that go up to 50mph, as well as axe throwing, rage rooms, and archery tag to keep your adrenaline pumping!
