The Michigan Maritime Museum invites you to experience the Sweetwater
Film Showcase, a two-day event on Thursday, July 24, and Friday, July 25 in the Museum’s R.B.
Annis Gallery and Exhibit Hall celebrating the lives, legacies, and contributions of underrepresented
communities connected to the Great Lakes. This showcase, part of the Museum’s Whispers Across
the Water series, features compelling short and feature-length documentaries that dive deep into the
human stories woven into the region’s maritime history.

The films highlight how the Great Lakes have shaped — and been shaped by — people from all
walks of life, especially those whose voices have too often gone unheard. From Native and First
Nations communities and coastal towns built on fishing and shipping to military veterans conducting
scientific research, these are the stories that bring the Great Lakes to life.

“This is the first event like this we have done,” says Director of Education & Programs Ashley
Deming, “and we hope it is the first of many. It has been wonderful to work with such talented
documentarians from all over the Great Lakes who are passionate about getting out their message.
It is our privilege to help make that happen.”

The showcase will feature 10 films over the two-day event in the morning and afternoon screening
sessions; each followed with a panel discussion with filmmakers and representatives. A highlight of
the event is the multi award-winning documentary THE FISH THIEF: A Great Lakes Mystery,
narrated by Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons. This riveting true story follows the decades-
long search for answers after prized fish began disappearing across the region. What begins as a
scientific mystery unfolds into a deeply human story of loss and resilience.

Tickets are $20 per day / $15 per day for Museum members including access to all film
screenings for the day, panel discussions, and Museum admission. Popcorn and non-alcoholic
drinks are available for purchase at the event. Seating is limited. Advance registration is
encouraged.

Don’t miss this compelling cinematic journey across the waters that define our region, our
livelihoods, and our legacy.
