Take a step back in time as you meander through the Victorian shops and neighborhoods of Coldwater Country.
Learn the story of how families worked and thrived in the late 1800’s with a stop at the Wing House Museum. Built in 1875 for newlyweds Jay and Frances Chandler, highlights a less complicated life when water came from the well, there was a fireplace in nearly every room for heat, and all forms of elegance could be found from the décor to the glassware.
The Wing House Museum is just one of the majestic structures in Coldwater Country’s historic districts, which you can now enjoy through the Historic Walking Tour app. The self-guided Walking Tour features buildings with styles from Queen Anne to Italianate to Victorian. The tour includes stops such as the Elks Temple, built in 1864, and the Original Passenger House, an 1850’s train depot. Others buildings along the route include the Henry C. Lewis House, which is home to the first installed indoor plumbing in Coldwater, and the JB Branch & Company Building, a former fine department store home to the first passenger elevator in Coldwater (affectionately called “Old Otis”).
Not to be missed on the Walking Tour is the famed Tibbits Opera House. Built in 1882, the Tibbits Opera House is the second oldest theatre in Michigan. Rich in history and ambiance, the theatre even today offers theatre-goers nearly perfect acoustics. And while the current COVID restrictions have changed theatre productions, Tibbits is adjusting to offer theatre in a safe, socially distanced manner, as well as classic film series and art gallery exhibits.
