Find your escape in the great outdoors as the weather begins to warm and the sun begins to shine! The spring season is the perfect time for outdoor recreation and fun after a long, snow-covered winter. South Haven has many options to help you stay active while visiting our beautiful beaches and downtown area, including outdoor trails, golf courses, fishing charters and fishing piers.
Bring your bicycle and head out on one of South Haven’s two picturesque trails. The Kal-Haven Trail spans a total of 35 miles from South Haven to Kalamazoo, with interesting sights and stops along the way. The Van Buren Trail runs a total of 14 miles from South Haven to Hartford, with a 7-mile paved trail spur that reaches the Van Buren State Park from South Haven. This trail spur is perfect for taking a short, scenic ride from South Haven’s downtown and ending with a stunning view of Lake Michigan atop the Van Buren State Park’s dunes.
In addition to the trails, South Haven boasts several nature preserves with their own unique features. Walk through Pilgrim Haven Natural Area’s trails to the long stretch of rocky beach, perfect for rock hunting and searching for beach glass. Next door is the Porter Legacy Dunes, which consists of 48 acres of rare, healthy back dune forest, along with native wildflowers, a winding creek and natural dune along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The Black River Preserve has serene hiking trails through forest and wetland, including one mile of river frontage.
For the golf enthusiasts, South Haven boasts two fun and challenging courses just outside of town: Hawkshead Links and Beeches Golf Club. Anglers can also have some fun by launching a boat or reserving a fishing charter for an adventurous excursion on Lake Michigan or cast off on one of South Haven’s two piers for a quieter experience. In May, the South Haven Steelheaders host their annual Pro-Am fishing tournament, which draws in many to participate and watch as fresh catches are weighed and judged.
