West Michigan’s Best BBQ

Whether you prefer a dry rub, or to slather your BBQ with sauce, grilling enthusiasts agree that this is the best time of year for barbeque! We’ve rounded up our favorite BBQ options from around West Michigan, in case you’d like your stomach to be in charge of planning your next outing.

The Lake House in Muskegon has some great barbeque on their menu, which they serve up to go with the great views of Muskegon Lake from their dining room! You’re missing out if you don’t try their BBQ Brisket Burrito, which features braised brisket, Carolina BBQ, braised rainbow chard, pico de gallo, black beans, molasses fried onions, chipotle black forbidden rice, cotija cheese, and cilantro lime crema, all pressed in a flour tortilla.

If you find yourself in Augusta for a round of golf at Gull Lake View Golf Club, we suggest also making time to stop in their restaurant: Charles & Darl’s Smokehouse and Grill. They make their own hickory pork, smoked in-house for at least 14 hours. Enjoy it on a pretzel bun, or in the pulled pork slider meal to-go, which will serve four. Our favorite way to enjoy it is as part of their loaded mac & cheese, which is topped with smoked pulled pork, crumbled bacon, shallots, a drizzle of house-made BBQ sauce, and crusted croutons. Check out the rest of their menu as well, for items like their smoked chicken tacos and wings.

Herman’s Boy in Rockford is set up to supply you with everything you need to make fall-off-the-bone barbeque at home. Visit “The Outdoor Cook” section of their store, where you’ll find the Big Green Egg grills, grilling gadgets, spices, sauces, natural lump charcoal, and more. Herman’s Boy is a local roastery, bakery, confectionary, deli, smokehouse, kitchen, and grilling gadget shop. Be sure to check out these and other treats, snacks, and coffees all done in house!

MOO-ville Creamery in Nashville isn’t just known for their dairy products: they also offer delicious food options! You’ll find BBQ pulled pork, homemade sloppy joes, all-beef hot dogs, and more. Place a pre-order, and you’ll be able to pick your order up right at their drive-thru window! We definitely recommend picking up some ice cream to go with your meal!

Vineyard 2121 in Benton Harbor may be known for its wines, but they also serve up some tasty BBQ! Their menu features a Brisket Mac and Jeff’s Beef Brisket regularly, with ribs making regular appearances as a featured item. They’ll be serving up BBQ features on Father’s Day, and are looking forward to being able to re-open their outdoor dining space for al fresco wine and food, plus live music.

Visit Slows Bar-B-Q at the Downtown Market Grand Rapids for slow-cooked barbecue favorites such as brisket, ribs, pulled pork, smoked turkey, jambalaya, and more, along with several dozen Michigan-based artisan and craft beers on tap. This stop is perfect for people who want to try a little bit of everything.

The Ludington Pier House Motel, located in Ludington, is planning on holding a Fourth of July BBQ Picnic! This is an annual tradition for their guests, who enjoy some BBQ pork and brats, followed by an evening of fireworks. The Ludington Pier House is a family-owned property, and they love to make sure their guests are having a good time! When you’re not enjoying the cookout, the motel is walking distance from the beach, museums, parks, restaurants, and local shops.

New to the scene is Lott’s on the Lakeshore, and they are winning fans far and wide!

This event features live music, craft beer, regional wines, and local BBQ in Whirlpool Centennial Park, just below the bluff from downtown St. Joseph. This is a great event to plan a weekend getaway around! Bring your own chair/blanket to camp out and enjoy the live music while you let your taste buds determine the best BBQ in the area.

You don’t want to miss the BBQ at The Q Smokehouse of Ludington. Whether you’re craving slow-cooked brisket, chicken, or pork ribs, The Q has you covered. The macaroni and cheese, as well as the cornbread and homemade pickle relishes, are among the homestyle sides that are worth the trip. This company was just honored with the Small Business of the Award from the Ludington & Scottville Area Chamber of Commerce for hiring people who are trying to get back on their feet, in addition to donating all tips to charity – resulting in $50,000 given back to community organizations. The BBQ that gives back, a meal you can feel good about (although you still might need those antacids).

Not too keen on climbing, but still want to reach a summit this summer? Visit Summit Smokehouse, Mt. Pleasant’s one and only full-service American Smokehouse BBQ and tap room housed with Mountain Town Brewing Company. Scale a mountain of delicious BBQ, you deserve it.
