John Ball Zoo (JBZ) has continued to monitor the rapidly evolving and at times ambiguous information regarding COVID-19. We have always remained in compliance with recommendations from officials and taken a number of additional steps to ensure that when we open we do so with the safety of our guests, employees, and animals at the forefront. These steps include limiting the number of guests on our 110 acres, closing indoor facilities and experiences, adding hand washing stations, and enhancing our cleaning protocols.
At this time, however, we have decided that John Ball Zoo will remain closed to the public and will not open to members on May 29th or to the general public on May 30th. With that said, we continue to conduct research while also seeking guidance from state and local leaders as we monitor developments to assess how to move forward and open as soon as possible.
In making this difficult decision, we have sought insight from our partners at the state, county, city, community, and law enforcement to gain the clarity needed for JBZ to open. In the end, it is clear that opening on May 29 is not in the best interest of our members, guests, employees, and animals due to the lack of clarity that still exists on the restrictions of the executive orders.
In an effort to spread some much-needed joy while keeping you connected to your Zoo, we’ll be continuing the popular Zoo Insider videos and other fun photographs and educational information on our social media channels and website. We also have many exciting features to welcome you once we do reopen including the new front entry and meerkat habitat, as well as BRICKLIVE Animal Paradise, and so much more!
For those who are seeking ways to continue to support JBZ while we remain closed, please consider making a gift to our recently announced matching gift campaign, renew or purchase a membership, and plan a future trip to the zoo once we open. Gifts can be made at www.jbzoo.org/donate.
We miss you and we cannot do this without you. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
