Golfing in North West Michigan & The Upper Peninsula

Boyne Highlands Resort is synonymous with golf, with four championship golf courses. From the timeless design of The Heather, the 2019 National Golf Course Owner’s Course of the Year by Robert Trent Jones, to the history and heritage found playing the Donald Ross Memorial- a composite course of Ross’s best designs, the classic layout of The Moor, or the brilliant design and breathtaking views of the Arthur Hills – you’ll experience a round of golf the way it was meant to be played across all 72 holes. Find the course’s new safety protocols here.

Northern Michigan boasts more than a dozen golf courses, and many of them make for the perfect “stay and play” at a golf resort. Better yet, many of these courses are a short drive from downtown Traverse City and other area attractions. Just outside of Traverse City, Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Acme is home to three courses: The Bear by Jack Nicklaus (celebrating 35 years!), The Wolverine by Gary Player, and Spruce Run by William Newcomb. Only The Bear and The Wolverine are currently open. They ask that you book your tee-time online.

An unforgettable golf vacation awaits at the four distinctly Northern Michigan golf courses of Shanty Creek Resort. Hit the links at Arnold Palmer’s The Legend, Tom Weiskopf’s Cedar River, the challenging Schuss Mountain course, and the original Summit Golf Course. For a fun new experience on the golf course, leave the golf cart behind and grab a Golfboard. Available at Schuss Mountain Golf Course, golfboards are a fun way to traverse the course, combining the ease of a traditional golf cart with the freedom of a snowboard. In addition, kids golf free! Juniors 17 & under play free with a paid adult any time, all season long on the Summit and Schuss Mountain golf courses. Juniors 17 & under play free with a paid adult on Sundays after 2pm on The Legend and Cedar River golf courses.

Thanks to the Keweenaw’s northern location, long summer days allow golfers to enjoy late afternoon and evening rounds in a picturesque natural setting. Don’t be shocked if you’re required to share the links with the area’s year-round residents—deer, fox, and foul. Find more information on these beautiful courses from the Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau.

With The Alpine and The Monument, Boyne Mountain Resort boasts two of Michigan’s premiere championship golf courses. The decades long history of traditional golf continues at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge (KML), however, this year they have added a few new twists. KML will take morning reservations for Speed Golf, also known as Extreme Golf. It’s a variation of golf in which both strokes played and time are considered in scoring. It takes less than a few hours and is the perfect way to start your day. Also new this year is Flinggolf. Played along the original 9 golf holes, Flinggolf is a fun alternative to traditional golf. Flinggolf uses one “La Crosse style” club and the players fling the ball across the course. Similar to the way snowboarders changed ski resorts, FlingGolf is becoming golf’s “future of the fairways”, and is played by a new swarm of young players. The golf course has more than 85 years of history, having been built in 1934 as part of the WPA / CCC projects. They have years of history in offering traditional golfers a unique and historical round of golf. These changes this year will add to the vibrancy they are working on at the Lodge, while not disturbing the traditionally-minded golfer. They plan to open the course on June 1st. Lodging is currently open and dining take-out is available.

The Petoskey Area courses are ready for golfers! There are 17 courses within 30 minutes with a wide range of courses from municipal to the courses you’ve dreamt of playing! Visit each course’s website to learn more about the current regulations and procedures.

A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort is officially open for the season. All four courses, lodging, and dine-in restaurants are open for visitors. Golfers are allowed to use carts, and the A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort is ready to welcome guests immediately for the 2020 season.

For more than 30 years, Antrim Dells has been one of Northern Michigan’s favorite courses to play. This classic Jerry Matthew’s design surrounds the golfer with natural beauty and spectacular views. The front nine features a beautiful parkland setting with acres of mowed grass, which allows a smooth transition into the woods and creeks of the back nine. Host of Michigan’s amateur championship for several years, The Dells is truly a fair and fun test of golf.

A round at Bay Harbor Golf Club is not your ordinary golf experience. With three distinctive nine hole designs by Arthur Hills nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan – all consistently voted among the best and most unique courses in America – each round provides countless memories. Across the street, Crooked Tree Golf Club is perched on the bluffs high above Bay Harbor and offers stunning view of Little Traverse Bay. Book a stay at the Inn at Bay Harbor to extend your golf trip. Find the course’s new safety protocols here.

Carved out of the rolling hills of Ogemaw County. The Dream and The Nightmare are two premium, must play courses in West Branch, located just minutes from exit 215 on I-75.
