West Michigan is an area known for its many wineries, producing award-winning vintages, offering inspired wine & food pairings, and showcasing the area’s agricultural prowess. Even with many tasting rooms currently closed to walk-in traffic, there are still plenty of ways to learn about, taste, and purchase West Michigan wines. Wine in West Michigan’s North Region

The Traverse Wine Coast in Traverse City is home to more than 25 vineyards across Old Mission and Leelanau Peninsulas. Located in northern Michigan on the 45th parallel, northern Michigan wine country boasts two unique peninsulas climatically moderated by the massive waters of Lake Michigan. Bonobo Winery was founded by brothers and longtime Traverse City natives Todd and Carter Oosterhouse. Hawthorne Vineyards is a pristine vineyard and tasting room destination just four miles from Traverse City on Old Mission Peninsula. The Jacobson family founded Leelanau Cellars in 1974 in one of its Leelanau County cherry orchards, believing Northern Michigan would be a great place to grow wine grapes and produce wine. Over 40 years later, the winery is still family owned and operated, the region boasts over 30 wineries, and that belief has been confirmed. Throughout the years, the tasting room has grown into a popular area attraction, now greeting over 40,000 visitors annually on the shores of the Grand Traverse Bay. In 2015, Maple Moon Sugarbush & Winery in Petoskey became America’s first and only Maple Winery. While many wineries combine various ingredients to create something new, it’s much rarer to take it a step further with maple syrup. Customers rave that the wines have a maple tone with a cream finish, varying from semi dry to sweet. Their products are available for purchase online.

Located directly on the 45th parallel, 45 North Vineyard and Winery uses their distinct location as the driving force behind making world-class wines that represent the region. The Fox Barn Market & Winery in Shelby has a unique setting within their restored antique barn for you to enjoy. Lemon Creek Winery in Berrien Springs is a family owned and operated artisanal producer of estate grown wines. The farm, first established in 1855, is now home to 160 acres of vineyards and 24 different wine grape varietals. Lawton Ridge Winery has been growing wine grapes at their vineyard in Lawton, Michigan since 1974, and they opened their production facility and tasting room on Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo in 2008. All of the wine that they produce comes from grapes grown either in their vineyard or in neighboring vineyards in the Lake Michigan Shore AVA.
