There will be a volunteer open house at Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) at 100 Dame Street, Suttons Bay on Thursday, March 12 from 3:30-6:30 pm. The event is open to new, prospective, and returning volunteers, and individuals can stop by at any time.
Current and prospective volunteers can explore stations that will be set up throughout the facility to showcase opportunities for volunteering. Stations include shipboard activities, boat shop projects, curriculum support, and more. Each station will have an opportunity to “play” with sampling devices or other hands-on components.
For every Schoolship program (Spring and Fall), ISEA needs volunteer crew to sail the 77′ schooner Inland Seas and volunteer instructors to work with youth who are learning about the health of the Great Lakes. During the summer months, volunteer instructors assist on public sail programs where both youth and adults engage with the Great Lakes on board the schooner. Volunteers have the opportunity to be ROV Leads and ROV Engineer Guides in the ROV Engineer and Explore program. They assist students as they build and test remotely operated vehicles from the schooner Utopia at the Discovery Pier in Traverse City.
Year-round volunteer positions are available in the Inland Seas boat shop located at the Discovery Center in Traverse City. In addition to maintaining and repairing ISEA’s schooners, boat shop volunteers have the opportunity to work with youth in the Opti-Pram Sailboat Building workshop or school programs building solar boats and viewing boxes.
Other volunteer opportunities with Inland Seas Education Association include ambassador positions, building and grounds maintenance, office tasks, fund development, and curriculum support for the Grand Traverse Stewardship Initiative. Individuals interested in any volunteering opportunity with Inland Seas Education Association can attend the Open House or contact Juliana Lisuk, firstname.lastname@example.org.
