Soprano Diane Penning to kick off library’s Sunday concert series

Loutit District Library (LDL) begins its ninth Sunday concert season on September 8 with Soprano Diane Penning and pianist Robert Byrens.

Soprano Diane Penning and pianist Robert Byrens present “FROM BROADWAY TO PUCCINI AND BACK” a diverse program of Broadway favorites from the likes of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe, Bernstein and others with some well- known and beloved opera arias sprinkled in.

Soprano Diane Penning’s voice has been described as “clear and free-flying with gorgeous top notes.” Equally, at home in both classical and Broadway repertoire, Penning has performed as a guest artist with over 30 orchestras nationwide.

Robert Byrens’ playing has been portrayed as “beautifully expressive” with a “singing tone” and “impeccable articulation.” He is one of the region’s finest collaborative pianists. Byrens serves as an artist-faculty pianist and vocal coach at Grand Valley State University. He also served as rehearsal pianist and vocal coach for Opera Grand Rapids for 25 years.

Penning’s performance is the first in a series of nine free monthly concerts. Traditionally held on the second Sunday of the month, this season will host the final two performances on the third Sunday of the month.

Concerts are held in the library’s upper-level lobby from 2:00-3:00 p.m.

As the LDL rolls into its ninth concert season, director John Martin believes his library creates a center for the arts providing access to all people and offering local musicians a voice in the community.

“Despite rising costs of concert tickets around the area, the LDL’s series is offered free of charge, enabling people from any income level to attend,” Martin said. “Also, our series offers local musical performers a stage to an audience who appreciates their efforts and talents.”

“LDL is also grateful for community leaders who financially support our programs,” continued Martin. “Carol Alexander and Kevin Carbary will provide funding for this year’s concert series.”
